The Energy Star tax credit was created as a result of the American recovery and reinvestment act of 2009. This tax credit is fully refundable and is offered to individuals who made certain energy star improvements to their homes last year. It is important to note that not all products with the energy star label qualify for the energy star tax credit. Only certain energy star products with a specific energy star rating will qualify for the credit.

Did you replace the windows or doors in your home last year? Did you replace the roof on your home? These are only two items that may be eligible for the energy star tax credit. Some energy star windows, doors, skylights, HVAC systems, roofs, biomass stoves, water heaters and insulation qualifies for a tax credit that is worth 30% of the cost of the energy star product, up to $1,500.

Other energy star products include geothermal heat pumps, small wind turbines, and solar energy systems. These products also carry a $1,500 tax credit but do not have an upper limit. When it comes to claiming the tax credit, you can only claim the cost of your product and not the labor.
