his year, more families than ever are eligible for tax credits for working families, regardless of whether or not they owe income tax. However, to get these credits, a tax return must be filed. The Mid-York Child Care Council is working with the National Women’s Law Center to spread the word about tax credits for working families so that more low- and moderate-income families are aware of and claim available federal and state income tax credits.

Changes in federal law increased the help that is available from existing tax credits, and also created one new tax credit for working families. These credits may be worth up to thousands of dollars to eligible families and can help offset the cost of child care and other expenses. This year, families may be eligible for:

* Up to $2,100 from the federal Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit, and up to $2,310 from the New York State Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit.
* Up to $5,657 from the federal Earned Income Tax Credit and up to $1,697 from the New York Earned Income Tax Credit.
* Up to $1,000 per child from the federal Child Tax Credit and $330 per child from the Empire State Child Tax Credit.
* Up to $800 from the new Making Work Pay Credit, if you haven’t already received it in your take-home pay.

“These credits can help families in Central New York make ends meet, but they must file a tax return to claim the credits,” said Lorraine Kinney-Kitchen, executive director of the Child Care Council. “Our goal is to help more families learn about the benefits of these tax credits, so they don’t miss out.”
